Several blocks in the Rosedale Neighborhood have participated inthe "National Night Out". Started in 1984, the purpose ofthis early August event is to heighten crime and drug preventionawareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crimeefforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-communityrelations, and send a message to criminals, letting them know thecommunity is organized and fighting back. Neighborhoods throughoutAustin and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn onoutside lights, and spend the evening outside with neighbors andpolice.
During the National Night Out, individual blocks hold events togather the neighbors and help them get acquainted. Activities plannedby individual groups can range from lemonade parties to ice creamsocials, cook-outs, and pot luck suppers. The Austin PoliceDepartment will provide materials and t-shirts for the hosts.
